The formation of a Malawi coalition of cultural experts was the outcome of a conference organized by UNESCO National Commission on cultural industries in March 2011. At this conference it was highlighted that Malawi government institutions need more support form civil society in the formulation and implementation of cultural projects and policies. At the end of the conference a statement was produced for the minister of culture.

The committee was charged to formalize this coalition and to take up its role according to its terms of reference established at the conference. At the committee meeting late last year members were assigned to take up various tasks. Amongst others, the Mlambe director and legal advisor volunteered to advise on the possible legal forms of the coalition and draft its articles of association.

Other committee members include academicians from Chancellor College, representatives of government, representatives of parastatals (incl. COSOMA, UNESCO natcom), members of the media, representatives of heritage and art associations (incl. Chewa Heritage Foundation, Mlhako wa Alhomwe, Mzimba Heritage Association, and Muscians Association and Book Publishers Association respectively).
