The Tisunge! reforestation project has at the end of its first phase reached a number of 24,400 trees. Chigoda CBO, at sGVH Singano, has been managing the woodlot. Half of the remuneration they receive is used to compensate the members of the CBO who take care of the trees; the other half is used for the CBO’s projects in support of the orphans, elderly and chronically ill.

This way both people and the environment are assisted. Mlambe is now looking for sponsors for phase II. Can you spare $/€ 1 per tree per year? Tisunge! Lower Shire Heritage Centre started a reforestation programme in 2006 with support of Mlambe Foundation. It is to act as example for others and result in a sustainable supply of indigenous (hard) wood in the future.

Indigenous trees grow very slowly so this project needs support for another 15 years at least before it becomes self-supporting through sustainable harvesting. Chigoda CBO has been working very hard the last 5 years and overcome many challenges including drought, salty ground water and termites.

They were urged on by their chief, senior Group Village Headman Singano and the needs of the vulnerable people in their community. Please contact Menno Welling if you think you can assist in the continuation and expansion of this successful project.
