26 Juli: On
its 30th meeting the UNESCO World Heritage Committee has inscribed the
rock art of Chongoni Forest Reserve, Dedza, on the World Heritage List.
Thus the unique features of these rock paintings have
finally gained international recognition.

zeer erkentelijk voor de donatie van een tweetaal computers
en een grote hoeveelheid kantoorartikelen uit de boedel van
de ANLS. Tisunge! Lower Shire Heritage Centre kan
deze spullen goed gebruiken.
20 July: Over the last couple of weeks we have
received a tremendous amount of books for Tisunge!
and the Anthropology Department of the Catholic University
of Malawi. Major donors are the Faculty of Archaeology and
Research School CNWS of Leiden University, the Afrika
Studies Centre (Leiden), the Archaeology Library of the
University of Amsterdam, Stichting Read to Grow, and Brill
Academic Publishers. On behalf of the youth and students in
Malawi, many thanks!
17 May: The
town of Wijchen has donated 40 monitors to our projects in
Malawi. This gesture is much appreciated.
15 May: At
the commemoration of Kamuzu Banda's birthday president Bingo
wa Mutharika opened the mausoleum of Malawi's first president.
It is located in Lilongwe City Centre adjacent to the
construction site of the country's new parliament building.
Wa Mutharika referred to dr. Banda as 'a true national
hero'. In 1994 dr. Banda's rule made way for a multiparty
democracy under UDF government. Wa Mutharika aims to keep
the memory to dr. Banda alive. Advanced in years, dr. Banda
passed away on November 25, 1997.

30 April:
On Queen's Day,
Yaël Kurzbauer raised 80 euros by playing the violin
in Amsterdam.
She donated the whole amount to Mlambe Foundation. Thank you
so much, Yaël!
We will use it well.

15 April: WWF -The Netherlands (INNO), has pledged 10,000 euro towards the
realization of
Tisunge! Lower Shire Heritage Centre. Part of
the funds will go towards repairing the damage caused by the
January floods and preventative measures for the future.

April:
Elinex Power Solutions has donated 8 UPS-s to the
Lower Shire Heritage Centre. Mlambe Foundation extends its
gratitude to Elinex.

April: Last month Menno Welling made a short trip to Malawi
to work with the other stakeholders on the realisation of
Tisunge! Lower Shire Heritage Centre.
A major problem for the construction work are the persisting
rains and the damage done by the January floods. With regard
to the first, we can only wait.
Illovo Sugar
Company has pledged assistance in restoration of the water
damage. In the meantime staff of the National Museum in
Blantyre have practiced in traditional weaving.
Starting September they will be teaching this lost craft to
the communities surrounding the Heritage Centre. Before the
arrival of the British there was a florishing weaving
industry in the Lower Shire Valley.

3 March: On
Februari 18 Malawi featured in the travel section of
the
Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. Publicity for
Malawi is appreciated. It is however striking that in the
article, aside from its negative tone and obvious errors,
Malawi is only recommended for its nature and wildlife.
Indeed, the tourist industry is yet to discovered the cultural
riches of Malawi.
1 March:
Till April 17, the Kunsthal in Rotterdam
is having an
photo exhibition by photographer
Jan Banning during his stay for NRC newspaper in Dickson
Village, one of the poorer villages in Central Malawi.
19 February: This year Mlambe Foundation has already
received over 3200 euro in private donations. We are
very grateful for this heart-warming generosity. Most
of the funds will go towards the establishment of
Tisunge! Lower Shire Heritage Centre.
We
thus thank the donors on behalf of the Lower Shire
communities.

February: Mlambe Foundation has also entered into an agreement with online bookseller
Powells.com.
A considerable 7.5% of the sales generated through this
site will flow back to the Foundation. Powells.com holds both
new, and old and rare books. To book purchase
6 February: The website of the Dutch Ministery of Foreign
Affairs, The Power of Culture,
has written a small news item on the Tisunge! Lower Shire Heritage Centre.
The construction of the centre has, as said, already
started, yet it has incurred some delay due to the heavy
rainfall in the month of January. The
subsequent flooding also affected Lengwe National Park getroffen.
